The Importance of Acoustic Testing in Buildings

Sound insulation tests are a vital component for ensuring today’s buildings can function efficiently, while also protecting the health of its users and neighbours.
CPS Leakage have carried out acoustic testing in Essex, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and London. Here we look at where poor sound insulation can create problems, and how our comprehensive testing regime can help avoid any issues.

Schools
School halls can have a problem with excess reverberation, which makes it difficult to hear someone properly. Another issue in schools is the problem of hearing people in neighbouring classrooms which makes it difficult for staff to teach, and for pupils to concentrate.
Many classrooms and halls need to have top quality acoustics for performance reasons such as for drama productions and concerts.
If there is a problem then we can carry out a reverberation test, and then advise on any absorbent material which should be added, so that it meets the relevant quality standards of Building Bulletin 93.

Businesses
There is the problem of ‘cross talk’ where private conversations like staff appraisals can often be overheard from other areas. The popularity of open plan offices means lots of conversations take place in the same space, which can make it difficult to concentrate and communicate. In larger companies which operate in several storeys, you could have the problem of noise, such as footsteps, from the floor above.
Some companies can be in the middle of built-up areas, near to roads and railway lines, and employees need to be protected from external noise.
In the case of internal noise, we would want to carry out a site visit; if the problem is external, which can include complaints from neighbours, then we would suggest a noise impact assessment, involving acoustic cameras and sound level meters, and we then make recommendations accordingly.

Domestic Properties
Excessive noise can result in arguments involving neighbours, and, in worst-case scenarios, prosecution by the local authority. Having a wooden floor installed can add to the noise for neighbouring properties. On the flip side, poorly insulated homes can mean residents can hear noise from adjoining properties.
We can carry out tests in advance of any wooden floor being laid down, so can flag up any potential problems. We can also test to see if your home fails to meet the relevant legislation – Building Regulations (Approved Document E) covers domestic properties – if you or your neighbours have a noise issue.

How We Can Help
At CPS Leakage we have carried out a range of sound insulation tests in buildings. Once we know the nature of your problem we will come up with a procedure and give you a free quote.
We can also carry out a range of other procedures, including air leakage testing on homes and businesses, and thermal imaging. We have worked in Essex and across East Anglia, and also in Kent and east Sussex. Click on the link above to learn more.
